Stories of Our Lives

Dir.: Jim Chuchu | Kenya, South Africa 2014 | 60 min

'Stories of Our Lives' was the first major film project by the artist collective The Nest. Over the course of eight months, they travelled around Kenya and collected stories of life as a homosexual, queer and transgender in a highly homophobic country. The stories were turned into five short film screenplays, collected here into one work with The Nest itself as the film's crew. The result has since gone from success to success all over the world. Jim Chuchu's black-and-white images are vibrantly poetic, and the stories about identity, lies, forced heterosexualisation and the fight for acceptance merge together into a single desire to be loved and to be able to live in Kenyan society with the love one feels. The film was banned in its home country, but has also given rise to much debate and has focused on sexual diversity, which The Nest will talk about live when they come and present the film.
