Copenhagen is ready for more PIX
Press Release
CPH PIX, Denmarks newest and biggest film festival, has set its dates for 2010. The second edition will roll out in Copenhagen between April 15-25th with a programme, which promises to be equally playful, courages and edgy as it was in 2009.
While CPH PIXs focus on new talents, new ideas and artistic courage remains unchanged, theres been a reshuffling of the team headed by Festival Director Jacob Neiiendam. From October
former PIX programmer Thure Munkolm steps up and replaces Niels Lind Larsen as Head of Programme, after the latter resigned to spend more time with his family. However, Niels Lind Larsen continues on as member of the new programming team, which will also consist of Eva Novrup Redvall, Michael Bo and Kasper Kristensen. Thure Munkholm is presently programmer and catalogue editor at CPH:DOX, the Copenhagen Internatioal Documentary Film Festival.
When CPH PIX was launched in April 2009 it was in the midst of the financial crisis and a massive spring box-office slump, but the festival proved that Copenhagen was ready for an new itching film experience and scored a record 37.000 admissions more than 3.000 higher than that set by the 19 year old Natfilm Festival, which in 2008 was merged with the Copenhagen International Film Festival and became CPH PIX.
The festivals off beat events, from the John Waters standup show to screening Lars von Triers hospital horror series The Kingdom at the actual location, were among the highlights, but the main competition also attracted the audiences attention and critical acclaim, despite being made up exclusively of firsttime filmmakers including Duncan Jones (Moon) and Heidi Maria Faisst (The Blessing). Brit Peter Strickland (Katalyn Varga) won the New Talent Grand PIX and its Euro 50.000 cash prize, with which he is now developing his next project. Philippe Falardeau's Canadian It's Not Me I Swear received the 'Politiken Audience Award', and with the more than Euro 16.000 in distribution support, it will now be released this month. Other films which were secured a theatrical release only after their success at the festival include JCVD, The Burning Plain and Synecdoche New York.
CPH PIX will present up to 170 features films from around the globe between April 15 and 25, 2010. Entries for the general programme as well as for the New Talent Grand PIX competition (and its Euro 50.000 cash prize) can be submitted through the www.cphpix.dk website before January 15, 2010.
